A long time ago, people discovered the Garra Rufa fish's ability to cure skin diseases and therefore Kangal became a health resort. The process of Garra Rufa fish nibbling off excrescent skin, which is not painful but pleasant, is also called Ichthyotherapy.
The name Ichthyotherapy comes from the Greek name for fish – Ichthys and the Psoriasis treatment (therapy) hence Ichthyotherapy.
This process is painless and pleasant as the Garra Rufa Fish is toothless.
We at Lively Aquarium breed the genuine Kangal Garra Rufa from the thermal basin of Kavak Deresi in Kangal, Turkey.
Is Garra Rufa Therapy (Ichthyotherapy) safe?
In a pilot study of the University of Vienna the treatment results of 67 patients were evaluated retrospectively and patients were interviewed with a questionnaire.
The results of this study was that the fish treatment in combination with a brief light treatment is a safe, side effect free treatment option for people suffering from Psoriasis.
Most patients were more content with the Ichthyotherapy than with any other administered treatment method.
The pilot study was published in the scientific Oxford-Journal “Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine” in December 2006.
