- Maintain stable water quality which matches the needs of your Dr fish. Water quality should be monitored regularly with simple to use and accurate test kits.
- Carry out regular water changes to maintain water quality. Ensure water conditioners are added to make sure tap water is suitable for the spa fish pond/pool use.
- Ensure water clarity.
These steps should form basic steps for the care of your fish pond/pool.
Fish Stress
Stress is the main cause of fish disease. Stress is caused by a number of factors such as poor water quality, bullying by other fish, capture or movement of the fish and poor nutrition. When doctor fish Garra Rufa is stressed its immune system breaks down allowing disease to attack.
Introducing New Garra Rufa Fish
Garra Rufa fishes that have been kept in a pond/pool develop natural immunity to the particular disease organisms already present in that pond/pool. Any new fishes introduced into the pond/pool may therefore come into contact with these disease organisms for which they have not yet built the immunity to resist.
As already mentioned, fishes carry their own individual population of parasites and bacteria with them. Therefore the introduction of a new Garra Rufa fish may bring the existing Garra Rufa fishes into contact with disease organisms for which they have no immunity.
Note: Here it is important for your Garra Rufa fish supplier to ensure that every batch comes only with healthy doctor fish. Thus it will cause no harm by carrying new pathogens, bacteria etc or cause any damage to the existing stock in the pool/pond..
Quarantine
Before introducing a new fish into an established pond/pool, it is a good idea to quarantine them in a separate pond/pool for a minimum of two weeks. Ensure that the water in the Quarantine pond/pool is of the same ph and hardness as that of the main pond/pool.
Vigilance
In spite of all precautions, disease episodes may still occur in the pool/pond. It is critical to monitor your spa fishes regularly so that you can notice any abnormal behavior or differences in the appearance which may signify the onset of disease. Prompt and correct diagnosis and treatment is the secret to increasing the chances of success when treating fish diseases.
Algae Control
Prevention of direct sunlight, correct water temperature and UV lights will prevent the occurrence of Algae. Apart from this, make sure that no Garra Rufa fish food or waste is present in the pond/pool. This too will assist in prevention of algae.
