What causes Slime?
Parasites infection by flukes such as Dactylogyrus, Gyrodacytylus sp and protozoan parasites such as Chilodonella, Lchthyobodo ( Costial) Trichodina, Brooklynella sp.
Symptoms of Slime & Velvet on Garra Rufa fish:
- If infected with slime or velvet, Garra Rufa fish start flicking and rubbing against objects.
- They make rapid gill movements.
- The doctor fish start hanging close to the surface of the water.
- They start showing red irritated areas of skin
- Opaque, white/gray patches of slime appear
- Dusting of gold/yellow spots (1mm) give the Garra Rufa doctor fish a velvet appearance.
Influencing Factors
Usually parasites are present on the spa fish in low numbers. However these are easily dealt with by the Garra Rufa spa fish immune system. But if the fish become stressed, because of poor water quality, then these parasites will rapidly multiply and overcome the fish. Poor water quality is the most common cause of fish stress.
How Does The Treatment Work?
Anti slime & velvet destroy the parasites which cause this slime and velvet. The treatment remains active for several days, ensuring all the parasites are killed.
This treatment can be carried out on site. Just ensure that any carbon media present is removed. Any re-dosage has to be done after 7 days of first treatment and after a 30% water change.
Remember most doctor fish disease is caused due to poor water quality.
